On Wednesday 08 May 2024, The Compass School hosted workshops on online safety, both for our pupils during the school day and after school for staff and parents. Our trainer signposted us to some good resources. We will be sharing these in our weekly newsletter with our parents.
However, here are some links for interested parents:
- Resources for Parents | SWGfL – this website has some great checklists for different social media apps that parents can go over to ensure their child can safely enjoy using these. It also has articles on screen time and video conferencing.
- Home (askaboutgames.com) – if you’re not sure about a game your child wants to play or is already playing, this website offers information and the PEGI rating on different games and how to set family controls etc.
- Common Sense Media: Age-Based Media Reviews for Families | Common Sense Media – this website also provides age ratings for movies, books, games and apps.
- Keep Children Safe Online: Information, Advice, Support – Internet Matters – this website offers support with setting up devices safely, choosing age appropriate apps and tackling online issues.
One of the key messages was that social media, gaming, sharing etc. can be really positive, but you need to be aware of the drawbacks – be open with your child and share online experiences with them so that they feel safe to come to you if they come across something that they don’t like.
