Schools and their staff form part of the wider safeguarding system for children. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families and carers has a role to play in keeping them safe. To fulfil this responsibility effectively, all professionals must ensure their approach is child-centred. This means that they must always consider what is in the best interests of the child.
At The Compass School our role is to meet the safeguarding and child protection needs of pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs. Our trust safeguarding policy provides further information on online safety, emotional and mental health, sexual and criminal exploitation, FGM, domestic abuse, homelessness and the impact of radical influences. We recognise our pupils’ additional vulnerabilities in all situations; in particular the local context within which The Compass School seeks to protect its pupils, and of which it is particularly mindful, is gang rivalry/county lines and potential sexual exploitation.
Our Safeguarding Policy ensures that all staff in our school, including non-teaching staff, are clear about the actions necessary with regard to a child protection issue. Its aims are:
- to raise the awareness of all staff and identify responsibility in reporting possible cases of abuse;
- to ensure effective communication between all staff when dealing with child protection issues;
- to lay down the correct procedures for those who encounter an issue of child protection.
The MARF (multi agency referral form) enables families and the school to refer themselves for support. The referral is discussed by a panel of professionals who determine, with school and the family, what the most beneficial support would be. The support could involve Health, Social Care services or a variety of other agencies.
